Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) provides a data model and a vocabulary in order to support publication of knowledge organization systems (KOS) such as thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading systems and taxonomies on the Web. It was developed by W3C and aims at providing a path for migrating KOSs to a Semantic Web context.

With SKOS, a knowledge organization system can be expressed as machine-readable data and then exchanged between computer applications and published in a machine-readable format on the web.

The SKOS data model views a knowledge organization system as a concept scheme comprising a set of concepts. It defines elements for labels, relationships, mapping properties, collections, and notes.
