Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) are schemes, including thesauri, that are designed for organizing and promoting knowledge and information in order to make their management and retrieval easier.  They can be described based on their structures and main functions. They model the underlying semantic structure of a domain.Their main  functions are to eliminate ambiguity, to control synonyms and establish relationships and present properties.

We examine 4 knowledge organization systems:

  • controlled lists,
  • authority file,
  • taxonomies,
  • ontologies.
